Before emigrating to the U.S., the family name was spelled Kolas or Kolash.
Joseph and Julia emigrated to the United States when they were 44 (Joseph) and 39 (Julia) years old, October 15, 1864. During this time the Civil War was taking place.
The family migrated to Wisconsin area to a town similar to Nebraska named Menominee. They also moved to Iowa in 1867 and then finally to Nebraska. Joseph moved to the Northern part of Cedar County in Nebraska just as Nebraska was becoming the 37th state in March of 1867. Joseph found work as a laborer in St. Helena and in 1869 was able to file a homestead claim for 160 acres of land located approximately ten miles Northeast of Crofton, NE.
Their first home was a combination dugout and sod house until a log house could be built.
The family name was changed to Kollars around 1890.

Joseph was about 12 years old when he immigrated to the United States with the rest of his family. They arrived in New York on or about October 15, 1864. Joseph signed his naturalization papers on April 30, 1918, in the State of Nebraska. The papers describe him as a farmer and his personal description as: height – 5 ft. 10 in., weight – 165 lbs., color of hair – black, color of eyes – blue, color – white.

The home farm place was recently owned by Ray Mueller and is located Northeast of Crofton, NE. According to Orville Kollars, the farm house is still inhabited and is located on the West side of Hwy 81 across from the Kollars Trailer Court between Crofton, NE and Yankton, SD.
Joe and Anna homesteaded this 160 acre farm and raised their children here. The homestead act passed by US Congress provided 160 acres free to those who could show improvement within a five year period.
Anna never learned English but still was able to communicate with her family and friends. After Joe’s death, Martin (Anna’s son) moved into the home with Anna and farmed the home-place and helped take care of Anna. Anna also moved in with other relatives later in her life. Orville Kollars remembers Anna always having chocolate kisses available for those who visited.

Joe Kollars was a happy go lucky man who loved to tell stories and jokes, and was a very good farmer and self taught carpenter. He was tall and slender and was a good listener. Joe was a good musician and could play the fiddle, banjo, ukulele, and piano all by ear. Before and also sometime after getting married, Joe played for barn and wedding dances to earn extra money. He would even give people rides home (those in too bad of shape to manage the horse and buggy) for a small fee. Many of the stories Joe would tell would be from these experiences. Orville and Joyce remember Joe enjoying “doing a jig” (soft shoe dancing) either by himself or with one of the grand kids. Blanche was more serious than Joe and a very good gardener and a good cook. Among the items made was some pretty good cinnamon rolls and always made Joe’s favorite Bohemian Kolache’s, from Thanksgiving until Christmas.
Joe and Blanche started farming on 320 acres that they rented directly West aross the gravel road of Joseph Kollars II farm. The original homestead of Joe Kollars II is located directly across form Kollars Trailer Court, which is South of Yankton, SD. Joe and Blanche (Joseph Kollars III) farmed this ground with horses. Joe and Blanche later bought 160 acre farm from Blanche’s parents Fred and Anna Gobel around 1915 or1916. This is were they lived and raised a family until retiring. (Guy and Bonnie Kohles currently own this farm – 2003). All according to Orville & Joyce Kollars – 2003.

Marriage Notes for DARLO KOLLARS and IRENE KOHLES:
Darlo and Irene knew each other for years and went to St. Rose School with Darlo being one year ahead of Irene. Both Darlo and Irene attended St. Rose Catholic School until 8th grade and then attended Crofton Public School. Darlo attended until the 10th grade and Irene graduated 1941.
Darlo and Irene were best man and maid of honor for two sets of relatives. The marriage between Glondale Kollars and Lawrence Kohles, and the wedding of Glenara Kollars and Charles Thoene.
The wedding for Darlo and Irene was on a Saturday, October 26, 1942, at about 9:00 A.M. The reception was held at Irene’s parents home, Paul J. and Julia Kohles farm house 1 mile South and 1/2 mile West of Crofton, NE, (currently owned by Kevin Kohles (2003) and formally the home of Lawrence & Glondale Kohles). A wedding dance was held at the Crofton City Auditorium with a band of Art Ridicle. Darlo remembers paying $25.00 for the night of music and entertainment.
After the wedding a short honeymoon to Bellview, NE, was taken where they stayed with Glondale and Lawrence Kohles. Upon returning to Crofton, Darlo and Irene lived with Paul and Julia for close to a year before Paul and Julie moved to their newly purchased farmstead 1/2 mile South and 1/2 mile West of Crofton. Darlo and Irene stayed on and farmed for an additional year before moving to their own farm place in February of 1945. Darlo and Irene purchased this farm place and 160 acres in 1946 at $55.00 per acre ($325.00 per acre in 2003 dollars), 1.5 miles South of Crofton, on the East side of the road (currently owned by Tony Dendinger (2003)). Farming the land, raising chickens and pigs and milking cows were part of their daily life. Gardening and canning of the vegetables and fruits kept the growing family healthy.
All of the children of Darlo and Irene were born on this farm place except for Collin, who born before moving to this farm, and Todd, who was born in Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton, SD.
Adjoining farm ground to the North was purchased on April 30, 1964, from Bruno Bogner for $175.00 per acre for the 80 acres.
Darlo and Irene owned this farm until year 2000.
